@simsa0 Quite possibly true, although remember that a lot of longstanding Labour members also left after Blair and Iraq, then rejoined because of Corbyn, too. I joined later to support Corbyn because it was the first time in my lifetime there seemed to be something worth voting for.

@simsa0 I’m sure most if not all on the Left will have formed their own view or subscribed to some such view or other. ‘The Left’ covers a very broad range of views even within the Labour Party. Corbyn got more votes in 2016 than Starmer did in 2020.

@simsa0 In the eyes of some, for sure. But remember that likely many, many more voted for Starmer to succeed Corbyn believing he would carry out his promise to stick with Corbyn-era policies.

@simsa0 Hardly needed, I would think, but certainly many believe he tried too hard to unify left and right (although I’m not sure he really had much choice), was too apologetic (although he kicked them out of the party for saying so), and should have ‘purged’ the right (again, how?).

@simsa0 A number of notable Labour wins also came from Left candidates.

@simsa0 I think for one, no one has said Corbyn is without faults or perfect? Secondly, I suspect much of this is driven by schadenfreude? The Labour Right has suffered some disastrous election results in the past few days, despite five years telling us they were the only electables.

@simsa0 You’d have to ask them that. But if you think that’s what is being said, then I think perhaps you are misunderstanding.

@simsa0 @CraigMurrayOrg Exactly. And I wasn’t suggesting that this love of charismatic leaders is healthy. Just how it is. I would even argue that Starmer is further to the right socially than Johnson. (Johnson, btw, believes ‘Labour votes’ are borrowed.)

@simsa0 @CraigMurrayOrg I think if Labour had a leader and a few higher profile people with more charisma than a piece of cardboard they might have a chance as well. Corbyn (and left policies) were popular against anti-charisma May, while Johnson is all charisma and no trousers.

@simsa0 @CraigMurrayOrg Like I say, you could be right, but you might be wrong. I don’t think it’s quite as simple you suggest. Corbyn got plenty of working class votes in 2017 (many UKIP and Labour policies were quite similar), but going against Brexit killed it. Meanwhile May, then Johnson, took UKIP.

@simsa0 @CraigMurrayOrg Like I said, it’s possible you are correct (but also that you are not). If the Left takes ‘back’ Labour it won’t be a centre party anymore though, will it? (Difficult to reply when you keep deleting ;) )

@simsa0 @CraigMurrayOrg I think that’s possible, and perhaps desirable, but also I think there are plenty of indications (Left wins in some locations) it may not be quite as simple and comparable as you suggest.
